Why 744 Experience Is the UK's Most Authentic 747 Flight Simulator
744 Experience is the UK's most authentic 747 flight simulator because nothing in the cockpit is a copy of the original. It is the genuine flight deck from a retired British Airways Boeing 747‑400, complete with its original switches, instruments and avionics, preserved in full working order after three years of restoration. Paired with a full Upper Deck Business Class cabin from a second retired aircraft, it puts guests inside real 747 hardware, not a recreation of it.
If you have ever wondered what separates a genuinely authentic 747 simulator from a themed cockpit shell with a screen bolted to the front, here is exactly what goes into ours, and why it matters.
What Makes a 747 Simulator “Authentic” in the First Place?
A lot of flight simulator experiences use the word “authentic” loosely. Many are built from replica panels, painted switches that do not connect to anything, or a generic cockpit shell wrapped around a home flight sim rig. None of that is dishonest exactly, it is simply a different product to what we offer.
Genuine authenticity comes down to three things: real aircraft parts that once flew paying passengers, professional grade simulation software rather than a consumer game engine, and aircraft performance that is modelled correctly, down to the pitch and power values a real 747 pilot would recognise. At 744 Experience, all three are true.
A Genuine British Airways Flight Deck, Not a Reproduction
The 744 Experience cockpit is the actual flight deck from G‑CIVM, a Boeing 747‑436 that first flew on 27 May 1997 and was delivered to British Airways on 5 June 1997. She flew for almost 23 years, clocking up 96,849 hours, before her final commercial flight from Accra to Heathrow on 15 March 2020 and retirement to St Athan the same day.
Rather than being parted out or scrapped, her flight deck was transported to Cheshire in July 2021 and spent three years being carefully restored by professional sim engineers. Every switch, instrument and system in the cockpit today is the original British Airways equipment from that aircraft, preserved in full working order. Nothing has been reproduced, and nothing has been shortcut.
Original Business Class, From a Different Retired Aircraft
744 Experience goes a step further than the flight deck alone. The Upper Deck cabin, rows 60 to 64 of British Airways Business Class, has been installed complete and seated, taken from G‑BYGG, another 747‑436 that flew for the airline from 1999 until 2020. It means non‑flying guests are not sitting in a themed waiting room. They are sitting in a genuine British Airways Business Class cabin.
Why Pilots and Ex‑Crew Say It Feels Real
The clearest proof of authenticity comes from people who actually flew the 747 for a living. One guest, an active 747 captain, put it plainly:
"As an active 747 captain, I was overwhelmed by how similar it is to my workplace. Even the Pitch&Power values are exactly right.
Another guest had flown G‑CIVM herself for British Airways to destinations including Singapore and San Francisco, and described what it meant to see the aircraft's flight deck given a new lease of life at 744 Experience rather than being lost to the scrapyard.
These are not comments from aviation enthusiasts guessing at what feels real. They are from people who spent thousands of hours at the controls of this exact aircraft type, and in G‑CIVM's case, this exact aircraft.
Three Years of Restoration, Not a Quick Build
In 2020, the pandemic forced British Airways to bring forward the retirement of its entire 747‑400 fleet, the largest in the world at the time. All 31 aircraft were flown out of Heathrow within four months, with most destined to be parted out or scrapped entirely.
Two large sections of G‑CIVM and G‑BYGG were saved and transported to Cheshire in July 2021. What followed was three years of restoration and engineering, overseen by professional sim engineers, to bring both sections back to full working order. That timescale is the reason every instrument in the cockpit functions as it did in service, rather than simply looking the part.
Built for Real Pilots as Well as First Timers
You do not need any previous flying experience to book a session. The experience is best suited to ages 12 and over, due to the height needed to reach certain flight controls, and your instructor adjusts the technical depth of the session to match what you already know. That means the same cockpit welcomes complete beginners, aviation enthusiasts, and former British Airways crew looking to sit at the controls again.
Fly It for Yourself
Reading about original switches and genuine flight decks is one thing. Sitting at the controls of a real British Airways 747‑400 is another. Our Short Haul sessions are perfect for anyone wanting to try the genuine 747 flight simulator experience. Sessions can be booked for either 90 minutes or 150 minutes. 744 Experience welcomes up to 3 non-flying guests to share the session with you, completely free of charge, with no extras added on the day.
We also regularly run Destination Themed Dining Experiences and Business Class Afternoon Tea, where you can settle into the original Upper Deck seats for a three course meal built around your destination, or a full afternoon tea, while your flight plays out on the genuine flight deck just a few feet away.
